Kickball is one outdoor activity that every kid has played, but what happens when you combine a slip-n-slide with kickball? The answer is pure epicness!
Slip-n-slide kickball is exactly what it sounds like. You play a kickball game like you are used to, but you use slip-n-slides as your baselines and slide into kiddie pools as your bases. Whoever came up with the idea should be labeled as a genius. The sound of slip-n-slide kickball sounds awesome, but playing it is even more awesome and will be an epic game to play with your friends!
What You Need to Play Slip-N-Slide Kickball
You’ll need some supplies to get your slip-n-slide kickball field set up, but it won’t break the bank. If you buy all new equipment, you will spend less than $100, but there’s a good chance you have some of these supplies around your house. Here is what you’ll need:
Building Your Field
The first thing you need to do is lay out your plastic drop cloths that will serve as your baselines. Once the tarps are laid out, put your kiddie pools at the end of the tarps as your bases.
The next steps are just preparing for game play. If you want to make the game a little safer, you can consider placing some carpet or cardboard under the tarps to make sliding and falling a little softer. If you are limited on supplies or funds, then you can just put it near the bases, which is generally where most of the sliding occurs anyway.
Use your tarp stakes to nail down the tarps to keep them from moving around too much. Be sure to nail them down deep into the ground and check them occasionally so they don’t come above the surface. This could put an unfortunate end to the game if someone accidentally fell on one.
At this point, your field is set up and you just need to add water and soap. Fill up the pools completely, since a lot of water is going to be splashed out during the game. Add the laundry detergent or dish soap to the baselines and rub it in to make them as slippery as possible.
If you want to make it a legitimate field, then you can spray paint home plate and the pitcher’s mound. If you’re a visual learner, check out the video below to help you out when setting up your field!
How to Play
The beauty of kickball is that you can make up your own rules, or you can go by the book. The basic rules are as follows:
Team A is out in the field; while Team B is kicking. The pitcher for Team A will roll the ball to a kicker for Team B. When the kicker kicks the ball, they will run toward 1st base and slide in the kiddie pool. Team A will try to field the ball and get the runner from Team B out by hitting them with the ball. That process is repeated until the lineup goes from top to bottom, or until three outs are made. Then the teams will switch.
There are a lot of different variations of the actual game play itself. Making up your own rules as a group is one of the best things that you can do, since it makes it fun and interesting! Most of All, Just Have Fun
Having fun without getting hurt is what slip-n-slide kickball is all about! In order to keep the game fun and safe, you may want to designate one player on each team to check the field periodically. Sometimes the tarp stakes can come out, or the pools can be drained because of the splashing. It doesn’t take much time or effort to put some more water back in the pools or nail in the stakes, and you definitely don’t want someone to get hurt and stop the game.
If you are having a blast when you’re playing the game, then you probably won’t even know what the score is, and you probably won’t care. Be prepared to get wet, slip around, get some grass stains and be worn out by the end of the game. But also be prepared to have the most fun you’ve had in a long time by playing slip-n-slide kickball!
