What's This?

Hot summer days mean more time will be spent near a body of water soaking up some rays. When you’re headed out to your nearest beach or lake, there’s nothing better than taking a group of friends with you and getting some games together. You can always throw the football or baseball around, but when you have a large group together, you don’t want to waste it.

There are only so many sports that can be played with 10-20 of your best friends at one time. The beach or lake are the perfect places to play a sport that you normally can’t play in your local park on any given weekend. Here are some of the most popular beach sports that you have to try out this summer:

1. Spikeball

Spikeball has become increasingly popular over the last few years. It is typically played with four people (teams of two) and has a similar structure as volleyball. There is a single round net that is set up in the middle of the players. The object of the game is to spike the ball off the net where the opposing team can’t spike it back. If the other team can’t spike the ball back on the net, then your team gets a point. Like volleyball, a team can only volley the ball three times before it must hit the net again. Even though it’s best played with only four players on one game, it is great to have a couple of games going so you can play tournament style!

2. Volleyball

Beach volleyball is one of the most traditional beach games, yet it is still one of the most fun games. You can play with as many people as you want, but it’s best if there are 6 or 7 players on each side. It is played like a regular volleyball game, where the ball is volleyed over the net until it hits the ground. There’s nothing better than getting sweaty and dirty and then jumping in the beach after playing a game of beach volleyball!

3. Ultimate Frisbee

You may have played Ultimate Frisbee before in the park or in an open field, but there’s nothing like playing it on a sandy beach. If you’ve never played it before, think of it like a game of American football. You have two end zones and seven players on each team. Teammates fling the Frisbee to each other and try to get into the opponents end zone. There’s no running involved in the game and it’s a non-contact sport, so anyone can play it. Chances are you’ll have a lot more people wanting to join your game when they see how much fun you’re having.

4. Football

Playing a game of touch or flag football is one of the most common beach games. You can play with as many players as you want to, and it doesn’t matter if they are male or female. Make up your own boundaries, your own rules and your own teams. There’s something different about running in the beach sand that makes you feel a lot faster than you actually are. You always see people tossing the football around on the beach, but take it up a notch and get an organized game together next time!

5. Washers or Horseshoes

There’s nothing better than digging a hole in the ground and chunking a washer into it. Ok, maybe that’s just me. But if you have the opportunity to do it, you should definitely try it! Playing washers or horseshoes on the beach is great because the soft sand is something that you don’t normally have in your backyard or in a park. These are generally 2-4 person games, but they are perfect for putting together a tournament and keeping your group engaged when you’re on the beach.

These are just some of the most popular beach games that you will see this summer. The next time you are heading to a sandy beach, be sure and plan ahead and get together a group to play some of these sports. You’ll have a blast and want to keep coming back for more!
